Administration in Purnia
Purnia is one of the fast developing part of Bihar and extends from Ganges in the south to the borders of Nepal in the north. It is surrounded by Araria and Kishanganj in north, Katihar district in south, West Bengal in east, Sharsha and Madhepur in the east. The town since ages has remained an important frontier post. During the Mughal regime the town was a military garrison to eliminate invasion from the North via Nepal. But the history of Purnia goes as far back as to the Mahabharat times and is known as the region where the Pandavas spent their final year of exile.
During the British era, this region was important from the standpoint of indigo cultivation which was the main cash crop for the English. It is also one of the regions in which struggle for freedom from English rule had started even before the National awakening had set in. The region has witnessed wholesome transformation in terms of administrative structure and is currently managed by district collector who supervises the day to day functioning in this part of Bihar.
Administrative Divisions of Purnia
The administrative head in Purnia is the District Collector. Purnia district is divided into 4 sub-divisions which is further divided into 14 blocks. The 4 sub-divisions are Purnea, Banmankhi, Kashba and Dhamdaha. The fourteen blocks in the district are East Purnia, Krityanand nagar, Banmankhi, Kaswa, Amaur, Bainsi, Baisa, Dhamdaha, Barhara Kothi, Rupauli, Bhawanipur, Dagarua, Jalagarh and Srinagar. The district administration is responsible for all administrative activities in the district right from law and order, water, sanitation, infrastructure, village administration, pachayati raj system and implementation of various central and state government programs. Some of the important programs which is being run in the district is the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee program which provides for compulsory work for food to jobless farmers and labourers. It also provides for an unemployment benefit. Other important program is the Janani Suraksha Yojana which is being run to provide maternity benefits to rural women and to promote institutional deliveries thereby reducing maternal mortality and infant mortality rate.Civic Administrations in Purnia

Police Department in Purnia
The Police department in Purnia is headed by the Superintendent of Police whose main job is to look after the law and order situation in the district. The officer in charge is assisted by Deputy Superintendent of Police and other important officials. From conducting raids in horders to cracking down crime syndicate and following court orders regarding ceiling, he carries out all in his official capacity.
